Max Saidi • January 28, 2022

Finding the right online session drummer for your music can be a daunting task. With so many options and varying factors to consider, it's important to take your time and make sure you're making the most informed decision you can — after all, this is a creative process.

Below you’ll find some useful tips and questions you’ll want to know the answers to before diving in. Once you have these bases covered, you’ll be on your way to finding the perfect drummer for your next project!

4 Things to consider when choosing the right online session drummer

Style: What type of music do you play? Make sure the drummer you choose has a style that matches your music.

Experience: How much experience does the drummer have? You don't want someone who is inexperienced and will not meet your expectations.

Recording quality: This is especially important if you plan to release your music online or sell it online. Make sure the drummer has a quality recording setup to ensure you have great recordings to work with.

Budget: Don't forget to consider your budget when choosing a remote session drummer. It's important to find out if there are additional costs you hadn't budgeted for, such as extra fees for making changes and alterations.

Tips for working with a drummer remotely

Make sure you're clear on what you want from the drummer before working with them. This will help to avoid any misunderstandings and ensure you're both on the same page.

When sending over files, be sure to include any references to songs you might like. This will help the drummer know exactly what sound and vibe you're looking for!

It's often helpful to include two versions of your song; one with programmed drums or ideas and another without drums. The drummer will use the latter to record their parts over.

Once your drum tracks have been recorded and you have some changes you want to be made, be sure to communicate these and don't be afraid to ask. You want to come away with a drum track with which you're 100% happy.

The advantages of working remotely

Increased flexibility

Hiring a drummer remotely means you have the flexibility to choose from a large pool of drummers with different styles and offerings, allowing you to find the right drummer for your tracks quickly.

Reduced costs

Working with a drummer remotely is far cheaper than hiring a drummer to come to a studio in person. There are no travel costs, and you don't have to worry about paying for extra time or studio fees.

Convenience

You can work with them from anywhere in the world!

Conclusion

When choosing a remote session drummer to work with, it's important to consider various factors such as style, experience and recording quality. By following the simple tips above, you'll be well equipped to finding the right drummer for your next project.

Hiring a drummer remotely can be very rewarding and in all cases will be the most convenient and cost-effective method vs hiring a studio and hiring a pro drummer separately.

With the right communication, you can come away with drum tracks that you're delighted with!

I recently had the pleasure of recording drums on Chris Manning's latest album, "Reach The Sky" . Chris and I go back many years, having worked on multiple projects together. Chris is a Dallas-based guitarist, songwriter, and session player, and his new album features some heavy-weights, such as vocalist and co-writer Cris Hodges (Grey Daze, In The End). The album also features a stellar lineup of guest artists, including legendary guitarist Bruce Kulick (KISS, Grand Funk) on "Fly Over The Walls" as well as Hungarian-born blues guitarist Tommy Katona on the instrumental "Texas Smoke". Bruce Kulick also served as the album's creative consultant. Thanks for having me, Chris!
